How to film a dance tutorial people can follow
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerFilm full body at waist height, teach facing away from the camera for most moves so viewers can copy without flipping, break the routine into short counted sections, and show each section slow then at speed.
Facing away or mirrored
Learners copy most easily when your left is their left. Teach facing away from the camera, or face the camera and mirror the video in an editor, and say which you’ve done.
Break it down
- Show the full routine at speed.
- Teach 8 counts at a time.
- Do each section slowly with counts out loud.
- Repeat at full speed.
- Put sections together.
Framing
Whole body with space for arms and feet, phone level at waist height.
Music
Count over the music for slow sections; play the track for full-speed runs. Check the platform’s music rules before posting.
Questions
Should I add on-screen counts?
Yes, captions with counts help people practise on mute.
